The People’s Action Party (PAP) has once again emerged victorious in Singapore’s general election, securing its 14th consecutive mandate since coming to power in 1959, according to The New York Times.
Led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, the PAP won 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, significantly improving its 2020 performance. The party also increased its popular vote share to 65.6%, up from 61.2% in the previous election.
Following the win, PM Wong expressed gratitude to voters for their strong support. In a post on social media platform X, he wrote, “Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team.”
He further called on citizens to unite as “One Team Singapore” to face future challenges, emphasizing inclusive governance: “We will involve Singaporeans in this journey to shape our future. We will engage and listen—because every voice is important.”
Wong also acknowledged the role of the opposition, particularly the Workers’ Party, which mounted a strong challenge. He pledged to respect their presence in Parliament and consider their input seriously: “Ultimately, the bigger contest is not between political parties, but between Singapore and the challenges facing us,” he noted.
Lawrence Wong, who first entered Parliament in 2011, has held several key ministerial roles and was instrumental in managing the government’s COVID-19 response as co-chair of the Multi-Ministry Taskforce.
