Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States would help “unlock the limitless potential” of their partnership, shortly after US President Donald Trump urged both nations to address trade barriers.

In a post on X, PM Modi described India and the US as “natural partners” and voiced confidence in the progress of talks. He also expressed readiness to hold direct discussions with President Trump.

“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people,” Modi wrote.

Trump, in a Truth Social post on Tuesday, welcomed the continuation of negotiations, expressing confidence in a “successful conclusion.” He said he looked forward to speaking with Modi in the coming weeks, reiterating his belief in the “special relationship” between the two countries.

The exchange follows recent tensions over Washington’s 50% tariff on Indian imports, with an additional 25% levy linked to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. The US maintains that such imports indirectly support Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine.

Despite these strains, both leaders have emphasized the enduring strength of bilateral ties. Last week, Trump affirmed that he and Modi would “always be friends,” while PM Modi responded warmly, describing India-US relations as a “positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”
