Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who is on his first overseas bilateral visit to India in his current term (September 9-16).

The two leaders exchanged warm greetings, reflecting the strong India-Mauritius ties and longstanding friendship between the nations. Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called on PM Ramgoolam in Varanasi.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, shared on X that the leaders discussed the multifaceted partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership, grounded in shared history, culture, and people-to-people connections.

PM Ramgoolam had previously visited India in May 2014 as the only non-SAARC leader invited to the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour upon his arrival in Kashi on September 9 and was received by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel.

The bilateral discussions focused on reviewing the full spectrum of cooperation, including development partnerships, capacity building, and expanding collaboration in health, education, science & technology, energy, infrastructure, and emerging sectors such as renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, and the blue economy.

The visit builds upon the positive momentum generated by PM Modi’s State Visit to Mauritius in March 2025, during which the bilateral relationship was elevated to an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’.

As a valued maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean region, Mauritius plays a key role in India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Region) Vision and the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Strengthening this cooperation contributes not only to the prosperity of both countries but also to the collective aspirations of the Global South.
