Nepal’s interim government, led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, will expand its cabinet today with the induction of at least three new ministers.
According to officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, the names were finalised after rounds of consultations.
- Kulman Ghising, former MD of the Nepal Electricity Authority, will head the Ministry of Energy, Urban Development and Physical Infrastructure.
- Om Prakash Aryal, ex-Legal Advisor to Kathmandu Metropolitan City, will lead the Ministry of Law and Home Affairs.
- Rameshwor Khanal, former Finance Secretary, will take charge of the Ministry of Finance.
The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for Monday, with names already submitted to President Ram Chandra Paudel, officials at Shital Nivas confirmed.
Karki, a former Chief Justice, was appointed interim Prime Minister on Friday and assumed office on Sunday. The cabinet expansion, initially expected yesterday, was delayed due to her packed schedule.
Officials added that Karki is also reviewing more names for other ministerial portfolios after holding consultations and interviews to assess their roadmaps.
Under her mandate, Karki must conduct fresh elections by March 5 and hand over power to a newly elected parliament. In her first address, she stressed that her administration was not in office to “taste power,” but to stabilise the country, address demands for justice, and prepare for elections within six months.
She also pledged state support for families of those killed during recent protests, promised assistance in transferring bodies to home districts, and vowed investigations into vandalism and violence that damaged property.
