A high-level Indian Parliamentary delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, has successfully concluded a two-day official visit to Brazil, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and global counter-terrorism cooperation before departing for the United States.

According to a press statement from the Indian Embassy in Brazil, the visit from June 1–2, 2025, focused on enhancing strategic cooperation with Brazil, particularly in light of India’s global campaign against terrorism and in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack.

The cross-party delegation included MPs Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), GM Harish Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, and Tejasvi Surya (all BJP), and former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu. They were joined by India’s newly appointed Ambassador to Brazil, Dinesh Bhatia.

During the visit, the delegation held high-level talks with key Brazilian leaders, including Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin, Chief Presidential Adviser Celso Amorim, Acting Foreign Minister Maria Laura da Rocha, Senator Nelsinho Trad, and Deputy Filipe Barros. Discussions covered shared concerns around terrorism, regional and global security, trade, investment, and cultural ties.

In each of these meetings, Indian representatives highlighted the urgency of international cooperation in addressing cross-border terrorism and conveyed the country’s bipartisan resolve and zero-tolerance stance following the Pahalgam attack. Brazil’s leadership expressed solidarity with India and support for its counter-terrorism initiatives.

TDP MP GM Harish Balayogi noted that Vice-President Alckmin expressed admiration for Indian culture, including Ayurveda and Yoga, and reaffirmed Brazil’s commitment to expanding cooperation in multiple areas including trade and industry.

The Indian Embassy praised Brazil’s government and Parliament for their warm hospitality and meaningful engagement, calling the visit a “significant step” in deepening the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership and aligning global efforts to combat terrorism.

The delegation now proceeds to the United States for the next leg of its diplomatic outreach.
