As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to begin his five-nation tour with a landmark visit to Ghana, the Indian diaspora in the West African nation is filled with excitement and anticipation. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in three decades.

During his July 2–3 visit, PM Modi will address the Ghanaian Parliament — a historic first — and hold talks with President John Mahama to strengthen bilateral ties in sectors such as trade, healthcare, energy, defence, and development.

Members of the Indian community in Ghana, many of whom have lived in the country for over a decade, see the visit as a powerful symbol of growing India-Ghana relations.

“We are very excited about PM Modi’s visit,” said Rajendra Mishra, a Ghanaian citizen of Indian origin. “We hope for greater cooperation, especially in the healthcare sector. His foreign policy has always ensured the dignity and safety of Indians across the globe.”

Priyanshi, another member of the diaspora, described the visit as more than diplomatic: “It’s a message of friendship between India and Ghana. PM Modi is an inspiration to many. We hope he visits more often.”

Aatish, who has been based in Ghana for 11 years, highlighted the visit’s economic potential. “Trade will flourish. India imports rice from Ghana and exports many goods here. Medical infrastructure is also likely to improve. We are truly overjoyed.”

As part of his engagements, PM Modi will also pay tribute at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, dedicated to Ghana’s first President and independence leader.

Speaking about the park’s importance, Executive Director Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh said, “Dr. Nkrumah stood for peaceful struggle and pan-African unity. India and Ghana have maintained strong relations since Ghana’s independence, and PM Modi’s visit reflects that shared vision for prosperity and cooperation.”

After Ghana, PM Modi will travel to Argentina, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, and Namibia. In Brazil, he is scheduled to attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 5–6.
