Former Indian Ambassador to the US and BJP leader Taranjit Singh Sandhu has described the recent multi-party delegation visit to Guyana, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, as “fruitful and productive,” highlighting deepening ties between the two nations across political, economic, and strategic fronts.

Speaking to ANI, Sandhu emphasized the high-level engagements held during the trip, which included meetings with President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the Vice President, Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and other senior officials. The delegation also participated in Guyana’s Independence Day celebrations.

“We had outstanding interactions with the President himself,” said Sandhu. “He showed great interest in enhancing economic ties and expressed a vision of Guyana as a potential platform for Indian investment in the Caribbean and South America.”

President Irfaan Ali, during his meeting with the delegation, reaffirmed Guyana’s unwavering support for India, calling the bilateral relationship “a bond of blood.” He firmly condemned terrorism and extremism, pledging that Guyana would stand with India in rejecting violence in all forms.

“Terrorism and extremism have no place in society and are against every aspect of human dignity,” President Ali said. “We will continue to support efforts to defeat them on every front.”

President Ali also advocated for India’s inclusion in a reformed United Nations Security Council, stating that Guyana has long supported an expansion that reflects global realities and includes countries like India and representation for the African continent.

This diplomatic engagement is part of a broader initiative following Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. In the wake of the attack, the Modi government launched seven all-party delegations to share India’s position on terrorism and expose Pakistan’s role in fostering cross-border extremism.

As part of the outreach, the delegation highlighted India’s zero-tolerance stance on terrorism and emphasized the need for international cooperation to combat the threat.

The visit to Guyana underscored India’s bipartisan diplomatic outreach and was praised for fostering stronger international understanding and collaboration in the face of global security challenges.
