External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has received calls from world leaders and foreign ministers across continents, expressing solidarity and strongly condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The brutal assault, carried out by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, claimed 26 lives—mostly tourists—and left many others injured.

In response, Jaishankar affirmed India’s resolve to bring the perpetrators, planners, and sponsors of the attack to justice. “India is resolved that the perpetrators, planners and backers of this attack are brought to justice,” he stated.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres personally called Jaishankar to express his “unequivocal condemnation” of the attack and stressed the need for accountability. Leaders from several nations followed suit in voicing support and denouncing the terror strike.

Among them, UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized the necessity of fighting terrorism in all its forms. Foreign Ministers from Sierra Leone, Algeria, Guyana, Slovenia, Panama, and Cyprus also reached out to Jaishankar, expressing solidarity, offering support, and reaffirming bilateral cooperation with India.

In the wake of the attack, India has taken significant diplomatic steps. During a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 23, the government decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 until Pakistan verifiably ends its support for cross-border terrorism. Additionally, the integrated Attari Check Post has been ordered closed.

The international outpouring of support marks a strong global consensus against terrorism and reinforces India’s firm stance on ensuring accountability for acts of cross-border violence.
