As the Iran-Israel conflict enters its fifth day, leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) issued a strong statement ahead of their summit in Canada, reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defence and condemning Iran as the principal source of regional instability and terror.
“We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself,” the statement read. It also highlighted the importance of protecting civilians amid escalating hostilities in West Asia.
The G7 further warned that “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon” and called for broader de-escalation across the region, including a ceasefire in Gaza. The bloc also expressed concerns over the impact of the crisis on global energy markets, stating they would coordinate with partners to maintain market stability if needed.
The situation has prompted swift diplomatic moves. US President Donald Trump left the summit early, reportedly to pursue a ceasefire initiative. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump has made an offer to Iran for a ceasefire and potential negotiations.
“There is an offer that has been made, especially to have a ceasefire and to initiate broader discussions,” Macron told reporters, adding that France would support such a move.
Trump, in a series of posts on Truth Social, reiterated his hard stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon… Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran,” he wrote.
The conflict, now in its fifth day, has seen heavy missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Civilian casualties continue to mount, with at least 224 deaths reported in Iran and 24 in Israel, according to CNN.
The G7, comprising the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the EU, continues to deliberate on the conflict’s geopolitical implications. The summit, chaired by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, underscores the high stakes for global diplomacy and regional peace.
