As tensions rise between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar has directed all districts in the state to conduct mock drills in coordination with civil defence units to prepare for potential emergency situations.
Speaking to the media, DGP Kumar said the instructions followed a directive from the Union Home Ministry, which has asked all states and union territories to carry out civil defence drills on May 7 to enhance preparedness for possible attacks.
“Instructions have been given that these drills be conducted in all districts—whether categorized A, B, or C—by involving police, fire services, civil administration, and disaster departments,” said Kumar. The mock drills are meant to simulate response mechanisms in the event of an air strike or other hostile emergencies.
Nineteen districts have been identified for focused implementation, though drills will take place statewide.
In parallel, civil defence teams have conducted briefings with personnel and the public on protective measures during air attacks, evacuation strategies, and managing panic or crowd situations during emergencies. Volunteers have been trained to guide citizens in real-time situations, including blackout protocols, camouflaging vital installations, and the use of air raid sirens.
The Union Home Ministry’s initiative reflects the Centre’s heightened alert level after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which left 26 dead, mostly tourists. In response, India has vowed severe punishment for the perpetrators and heightened national security efforts across civil and military sectors.
The drills aim to ensure that not only the security forces but also civilians are equipped to respond swiftly and effectively in case of future threats.
