Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts of West Bengal. The ₹1,010 crore initiative aims to bring Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households, benefit more than 100 commercial and industrial establishments, and provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) through 19 new fueling stations.

Addressing the event virtually, PM Modi emphasized India’s transition to a gas-based economy and highlighted the government’s efforts to make clean, affordable energy accessible to all.

“Today, our country is rapidly progressing towards an energy-based economy. The city gas distribution network has reached over 520 districts. CNG has transformed transportation, reduced pollution, and eased the financial burden on citizens,” he said.

He pointed out that over 31 crore Indians now have LPG connections, underscoring the government’s commitment to gas accessibility.

PM Modi also referenced the Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project as a transformative move in linking eastern India to the national gas grid, thereby boosting industrial growth and job creation.

“These initiatives are not just about fuel—they’re about employment, clean energy, and empowering households and industries,” he added.

Following the event, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Bihar later in the day and Uttar Pradesh tomorrow, where he will continue inaugurating key infrastructure and development projects.
