A terrorist was neutralised during an intense overnight gunfight in the Akhal area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed on Saturday. The joint anti-terror operation involving the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and the Special Operations Group (SOG) is still in progress.

In a post on social media platform X, Chinar Corps stated: “OP AKHAL, Kulgam. Intermittent and intense firefight continued through the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact. One terrorist has been neutralised so far. Operation continues.”

The operation began as part of a wider crackdown on militant activities in the region. Forces continue to maintain a strong perimeter as they search for any additional threats in the area.

In a separate incident earlier this week on July 30, an encounter broke out near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch sector, after Indian Army troops detected suspicious movement near the border fence.

The Army’s White Knight Corps reported that two individuals were observed behaving suspiciously. When challenged, they opened fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire with the troops.

“Contact with terrorists. Suspected movement of two individuals was observed by own troops along the fence in the general area of Poonch Sector. Gunfire exchanged,” White Knight Corps said on X.

Both operations underscore the heightened alert and continued vigilance of Indian security forces along the LoC and in the hinterland to combat terrorism and maintain regional security.
