Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday expressed profound grief over the demise of Governor La Ganesan, who passed away in Chennai on August 15.
In a condolence message, Rio described Ganesan as a leader of integrity, wisdom, and moral strength. “His modest nature endeared him to the people and will continue to inspire generations,” the Chief Minister said, recalling his contributions to unity and development in the state.
Ganesan, who assumed office as the 21st Governor of Nagaland on February 11, 2023, was praised for his selfless service and calm leadership. “The void left by his passing will be deeply felt, but we take comfort in the legacy of service, courage, and leadership he leaves behind,” Rio added.
According to Apollo Hospital, Chennai, Ganesan had been admitted on August 8 following a catastrophic intracerebral haemorrhage and remained in a coma. Despite medical efforts, he passed away at 6:23 pm on Independence Day.
In honour of the late Governor, the Nagaland government declared a seven-day state mourning from August 16 to 22. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on government buildings, and no official entertainment will be held, Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen announced.
Condolences poured in from across the nation. President Droupadi Murmu remembered Ganesan’s long public service, including his tenure as Rajya Sabha MP and Governor of Manipur and West Bengal. “His contribution to the development of Tamil Nadu and the country will be remembered,” she said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a “devout nationalist” who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, DMK MP Kanimozhi, BJP leaders, and others also paid tribute.
BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit announced that Ganesan’s mortal remains will be kept at Kannadasan Ground near his residence on Saturday morning for public homage. His last rites will be performed at Besant Nagar crematorium on August 16.
