Congress General Secretary in-charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Manipur, describing it as a “farce” rather than a genuine effort to promote peace and harmony.
Ramesh pointed out that the Prime Minister is scheduled to spend less than three hours in the violence-hit state. “So now it is official. The PM will spend less than 3 hours in Manipur tomorrow. This visit, instead of providing a force for peace and harmony, is actually going to be a farce,” he posted on X.
He further argued that such a rushed trip was an “insult” to the people of Manipur, who have been waiting for the Prime Minister’s intervention during 29 “long and agonising months” of unrest. “September 13 will actually be a non-visit by the PM, who has once again revealed his callousness and insensitivity towards the people of Manipur,” he said.
Despite the criticism, PM Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to Manipur’s inclusive development. He announced plans to attend programmes in Churachandpur and Imphal on September 13, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects worth more than ₹7,300 crore. These include road and highway projects, working women’s hostels, IT and police infrastructure, and new markets, including the iconic all-women Ima Markets across four districts.
Additionally, projects worth over ₹1,200 crore will be inaugurated in Imphal, including the Civil Secretariat, IT SEZ Building, and New Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri, as well as Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata.
The Prime Minister’s Manipur visit is part of a larger five-state tour covering Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar, where he will unveil projects worth ₹71,850 crore between September 13–15.
