On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the 14th Dalai Lama delivered a heartfelt address in Dharamshala, calling for compassion, unity, and service to others as guiding principles in life. Speaking at the Tsuglagkhang temple, the Tibetan spiritual leader reflected on his lifelong commitment to the Bodhichitta path — a life of wisdom, selflessness, and spiritual discipline.
“As humans, it is natural to have love in our hearts and to help one another. I’ve always sought to serve others with the best of my abilities,” the Dalai Lama said to an audience that included Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Hollywood actor Richard Gere, monks, and devotees.
Expressing gratitude to those who gathered out of joy and devotion, he said, “You have come here not out of obligation but with joy and respect, and for that, I thank you.”
The Dalai Lama elaborated on his core spiritual practices — the cultivation of Bodhichitta (the spirit of enlightenment) and the view of emptiness, which together form the basis of his pursuit of Buddhahood.
“Practicing Bodhichitta alongside the view of emptiness on a daily basis lays the foundation for full enlightenment,” he said. “This way, I can die without regret.”
He also acknowledged the admiration he receives from around the world, but noted that it stems not from a desire for fame, but from a life devoted to selfless service.
“If I had pursued admiration selfishly, it would not be genuine. Holding others dearer than myself is what truly draws people closer,” he remarked.
Reflecting on his spiritual journey since taking his bhikshu vows before the Jowo Shakyamuni statue at Jokhang Temple, the Dalai Lama affirmed that he feels no pride or arrogance, but only fulfillment.
“I have not wasted my life. As a follower of Buddha, my practice is to serve both the people and the Dharma,” he concluded.
The 90th birthday celebration drew participants from across India and the globe, with Tibetan communities, Buddhist monks, and spiritual followers offering prayers, rituals, and heartfelt tributes to the leader many revere as a global icon of peace and compassion.
