The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is set to assume responsibility for the security of the Vice President of India, providing an elite ‘Z+’ category cover, sources said on Tuesday.

The decision follows fresh threat assessments by the Intelligence Bureau (IB), after which the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the CRPF to take charge. A formal written order is awaited, but the transition could take place as early as Wednesday.

Under the new arrangement, the CRPF’s specially trained VIP security commandos will provide close protection, while the Delhi Police will continue to manage access control, perimeter security, and outer cordon duties.

The ‘Z+’ category, one of the highest levels of protection in India, involves deployment of over 55 armed personnel along with escort vehicles and support staff. Commandos in this category are equipped with counter-terror expertise, close combat training, and high-threat response capabilities.

According to sources, the move is also being aligned with the revised Blue Book security protocols, which govern the protection of the country’s top constitutional authorities. The CRPF already secures several other high-risk dignitaries across India.
