The Yamuna River in Delhi is flowing above the danger mark after all 18 gates of the Hathinikund Barrage in Haryana’s Yamunanagar were opened on Sunday following heavy rainfall.

Visuals from Delhi’s ITO area showed water levels rising above the danger mark, sparking concerns for possible flooding.

According to Vijay Garg, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department, around 1.78 lakh cusecs of water entered the river after the recent downpour, marking the highest inflow of the season.

Continuous rainfall has pushed up water levels in rivers, creating flood-like situations in several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for multiple districts of Maharashtra until August 20, while also warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rain in parts of Haryana.

Light to moderate showers are expected across several districts of Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi-NCR in the coming days. IMD scientist Surinder Paul noted that rains will persist until August 20 with a brief lull expected on August 21–22, after which the monsoon is likely to intensify again from August 23.

The IMD cautioned that waterlogging in low-lying areas and agricultural fields could worsen if rainfall intensifies in southern Haryana districts such as Gurugram and Faridabad. While ruling out an immediate red alert, officials urged residents and local authorities to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
