IMD Issues Red Alert Across North India; Heavy Rains Predicted

In Jammu & Kashmir, red alert districts include Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Jammu, Ramban, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Doda, and Kishtwar.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert warnings for multiple states after continuous heavy rainfall, cautioning of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in several regions.

According to the latest nowcast, moderate to intense rainfall is expected over the next three hours in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, northern Punjab, northern Haryana, eastern Rajasthan, southwest Uttar Pradesh, northwest and eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha.

In Jammu & Kashmir, red alert districts include Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Jammu, Ramban, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Doda, and Kishtwar. In Punjab, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawashahr, Rupnagar, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, and Sangrur are under alert. Himachal Pradesh districts Mandi, Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, and Solan, along with Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, and SAS Nagar, are also on high warning.

Between 8:30 am Tuesday and 5:30 am Wednesday, heavy rainfall was recorded across Jammu & Kashmir. Reasi logged the highest at 203 mm, followed by Katra (193 mm), Batote (157.3 mm), Doda (114 mm), and Baderwah (96.2 mm). Jammu city itself received 81 mm, while other stations like Banihal (95 mm), Ramban (82 mm), Kokernag (68.2 mm), and Pahalgam (55 mm) also reported significant showers. Fresh data at 6:45 am on September 3 showed Reasi receiving an even higher 230.5 mm.

Meanwhile, widespread rainfall has been reported in other parts of the country, including Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, coastal Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, and the Andaman Islands.

In view of the heavy rains, the Directorate of School Education Jammu has ordered the closure of all government and private schools across Jammu Division on September 3.
