Congress MP Imran Masood on Wednesday strongly criticised Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar for targeting the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government over the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata, calling the incident tragic but urging against political exploitation of such sensitive cases.

Masood condemned the crime but questioned the BJP’s silence on similar atrocities in BJP-ruled states.

“It is a tragic incident, but such cases are happening across the country, including in states ruled by the BJP. Why is the BJP not speaking up about those? There’s no point in doing politics over such matters,” Masood told ANI.

His remarks came in response to Sukanta Majumdar’s criticism of the Mamata Banerjee-led government, where the BJP MP cited a pattern of increasing crimes against women in West Bengal.

“In a gap of eight months, two such incidents have occurred — one at RG Kar and another in Kasba involving a 19-year-old law student. Despite West Bengal having a woman chief minister, such incidents are recurring,” Majumdar said on July 1.

Meanwhile, Majumdar also approached the Calcutta High Court, alleging a violation of his fundamental rights following his arrest by West Bengal police. He said he had been detained three times, including once during a protest on June 28 that led to an overnight stay at Lal Bazaar police station.

The BJP has maintained that its protests are aimed at holding the state government accountable, while opposition leaders like Masood caution against politicising crimes against women and urge consistent attention across all states.
