A cloudburst-like situation struck parts of Jalgaon district in Maharashtra on Tuesday, inundating homes, damaging farmland, and affecting at least 10 villages, officials said.
District Collector Ayush Prasad confirmed that initial reports indicate 452 houses were flooded, nearly 2,500 hectares of agricultural land damaged, and one person lost their life. He added that around 250 cattle and nearly 1,800 smaller animals also perished in the disaster.
Maharashtra Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan visited the affected areas to assess the damage. He said that heavy rains over two consecutive days in four tehsils of Jalgaon had devastated crops and homes, causing significant hardship to farmers.
“Water entered houses, and large areas of crops have been washed away. I have directed all officials to carry out a damage survey at the earliest so that compensation can be provided to those who have suffered losses,” Mahajan said.
