Mauritius Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Thursday praised India’s longstanding partnership with Mauritius, acknowledging that his country has “benefited immensely” from New Delhi’s generous assistance and expertise in key sectors over the years.

Speaking at a joint press briefing after bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramgoolam expressed gratitude for India’s consistent support in areas critical to Mauritius’ development, including health, education, renewable energy, infrastructure, capacity building, and maritime security.

“Over the years, India, through its various governments, has accompanied Mauritius in its journey towards progress. India’s timely support continues to make a tangible difference in improving the quality of life of Mauritians,” Ramgoolam said.

He also thanked PM Modi for extending a special economic package, which will strengthen cooperation in education, energy, health services, and infrastructure. A key highlight of this package is the upcoming establishment of a state-of-the-art Ayurvedic Centre in Mauritius, which Ramgoolam described as “an exceptional one” made possible through India’s support.

Recalling the ceremonial welcome he received upon arrival in Varanasi, Ramgoolam said, “Both my wife and I were amazed at the hospitality. I believe no other Prime Minister has ever received such a welcome. Now I understand why you get elected in such huge numbers.”

Ramgoolam is on his first overseas bilateral visit of this term, from September 9–16, and was accorded a Guard of Honour upon his arrival in Kashi, received by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel. Earlier in the day, he also met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

The bilateral meeting between Modi and Ramgoolam underscored the deep civilisational, cultural, and people-to-people ties that have long defined India-Mauritius relations.
