The Election Commission of India has announced that the election to fill the vacant post of the Vice President of India will be held on September 9, with the vote counting and result declaration on the same day.

The last date for filing nominations is August 21, while the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is August 25.

The vacancy arose following the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar cited health concerns and stated that the decision was made “in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”

In preparation for the election, the Election Commission confirmed on Thursday that it has finalized the Electoral College list for the 2025 Vice Presidential election. A post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Commission said the list is arranged alphabetically by State and Union Territory and will be available for purchase from the date of notification.

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, using a single transferable vote system with proportional representation. Voting is conducted via secret ballot.

As per constitutional provisions, if the Vice President’s office falls vacant due to reasons such as resignation, death, or removal, an election must be held as soon as possible, and the newly elected Vice President serves a full five-year term from the date of assuming office.
