A two-member Indian Coast Guard (ICG) delegation, led by Director General Paramesh Sivamani, is representing India at the 4th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in Rome, Italy, being held from September 11 to 12.
The summit, co-chaired by Italy and Japan, has drawn participation from delegates representing 115 countries and international organisations, underscoring its role as a premier platform for international Coast Guard cooperation.
According to an official statement by ICG PRO Commandant Amit Uniyal, the summit provides an opportunity to share experiences and best practices on key issues such as maritime safety, marine environment protection, emergency response to pollution incidents, natural disasters, and maritime accidents.
It also focuses on maritime security, with emphasis on tackling transnational crimes at sea through advanced technology, training, human resource development, and enhanced regional as well as international cooperation under the shared principle of being “Guardians at Sea.”
The Coast Guard Global Summit was first convened in 2017 by the Japan Coast Guard and the Nippon Foundation. Since then, it has grown into an influential forum for dialogue and confidence-building among global maritime forces.
At this year’s edition, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered the opening address, while Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba participated virtually, highlighting the importance of global cooperation in marine pollution response, search and rescue operations, and maritime law enforcement.
As part of its contribution, the Indian Coast Guard delivered an expert lecture titled “Guardians Against the Blaze: ICG’s Tactical Response to Fire Emergencies”, showcasing India’s advanced capabilities and proactive role in maritime safety and security.
Looking forward, the ICG has announced its intention to bid for the Presidency of the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit, scheduled to be hosted in India in 2027. This move reflects New Delhi’s growing commitment to global maritime governance and its ambition to play a leading role in ensuring safer, cleaner, and more secure seas.
