Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced a Special Economic Package for Mauritius, reaffirming India’s role as a key development partner of the Indian Ocean nation. The announcement came after delegation-level talks with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi.
Calling the package “not assistance but an investment in our shared future,” PM Modi said it will strengthen infrastructure, generate employment opportunities, and improve healthcare facilities in Mauritius.
Key initiatives under the package include:
- Establishing an AYUSH Centre of Excellence in Mauritius.
- Expanding the 500-bed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital.
- Building a Veterinary School and Animal Hospital.
- Advancing infrastructure projects such as the ATC tower at SSR International Airport, Chagos Marine Protected Area, and highway expansion projects.
PM Modi also highlighted cooperation in digital payments with UPI and RuPay already launched in Mauritius, as well as energy transition projects including the supply of 100 electric buses and support for a 17.5 MW floating solar plant at Tamarind Falls.
He further announced collaborations in science, technology, and education, including a new Directorate of Science and Technology in Mauritius and partnerships between IIT Madras, the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, and the University of Mauritius.
On the strategic front, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to a free, open, and secure Indian Ocean, noting that Mauritius’ Coast Guard Ship is being refitted in India, while 120 officers are undergoing training.
Reflecting on the legacy of Sir Shivsagar Ramgoolam, PM Modi described him as both the father of the Mauritian nation and the founder of the “unbreakable bridge” between the two countries.
Ramgoolam, who arrived in Varanasi on September 10 to a ceremonial Guard of Honour, is on a week-long state visit to India at PM Modi’s invitation.
