Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva on Wednesday said that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is “stable” following an attack during her weekly Jan Sunvai at her Civil Lines residence. He confirmed that doctors had examined her and that she remains determined to continue her public engagements.
Narrating the incident, Sachdeva said a man approached the CM with some papers and suddenly grabbed her hand in an attempt to pull her towards him, leading to a brief scuffle before he was overpowered. The accused has since been taken into custody, and an investigation is underway.
“The CM is stable. Doctors have examined her. I have met her, she is a strong woman. It seems she suffered a light blow to the head. The stories about slapping or stone-throwing are fabricated. Such incidents are condemnable, but Jan Sunvai will continue. She has said she will not cancel her programs,” Sachdeva told reporters.
Condemning the incident, Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa called it a “political conspiracy” by rivals who, he alleged, are unable to tolerate the CM’s direct connect with the public. “She works day and night for Delhi. The police investigation will reveal the truth,” Sirsa said in a video message.
Echoing the condemnation, Minister Kapil Mishra termed the incident a “cowardly act,” asserting that the government would neither “bow” nor “stop” in its commitment to Delhi’s development. “Those who fear reforms like Ayushman Card, Devi buses, sewer system improvements, and Yamuna cleaning are resorting to such tactics,” he wrote on X.
Police are continuing to probe the motive behind the attack.
