Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed UNESCO’s decision to include 12 Maratha forts in the World Heritage List, describing each fort as a living monument that has borne witness to India’s rich and resilient history.

Speaking during the 124th episode of his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said, “UNESCO has recognised 12 Maratha forts as World Heritage Sites—11 in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu. Every fort has a page of history attached to it, and every stone has witnessed a historical event.”

Highlighting the military brilliance and cultural heritage of the Maratha Empire, the Prime Minister praised the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. “Salher Fort, where the Mughals faced defeat… Shivneri, where Shivaji Maharaj was born… Khanderi, a marvel built in the middle of the sea. These are not just forts but stories of courage and unmatched vision,” he said.

PM Modi also recalled his personal visit to Raigad Fort, calling the experience unforgettable. He further emphasized the importance of preserving forts across India, citing examples from Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, including Chittaurgarh, Amer, Gulbarga, and Kalinjar Fort.

“These forts have withstood centuries of attacks and extreme weather, yet never bowed down. They are more than stone—they are the pride of our culture and symbols of India’s unbroken self-respect,” he added.

UNESCO’s decision, taken at the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee, marks the inscription of the “Maratha Military Landscapes of India” as India’s 44th entry on the World Heritage List. The Ministry of Culture called it a tribute to India’s enduring architectural, cultural, and historical legacy.
