IAEA to Hold Emergency Meeting Amid US-Israel Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced an emergency meeting of its Board of Governors, scheduled for Monday, in response to the escalating military conflict in West Asia, following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi confirmed the development on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter), stating: “In light of the urgent situation in Iran, I am convening an emergency meeting of the @IAEAorg Board of Governors for tomorrow.”

Earlier, the IAEA said that there had been no reported increase in off-site radiation levels after the targeted bombings of Iran’s nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The agency added that further assessments will be provided as more data becomes available.

The strikes were led by the United States using Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, which deployed bunker-busting ordnance on key Iranian nuclear infrastructure.

In reaction, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) released a strongly worded statement denouncing the attacks as “savage aggression and a blatant violation of international law, especially the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).” The statement also accused the IAEA of “indifference and even complicity” in the wake of the attacks.

Despite the strikes, Tehran asserted that its nuclear development program will continue, framing the action as part of its sovereign right.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded US President Donald Trump for his decisive action, claiming the precision strikes would “change history” and help dismantle Iran’s nuclear threat.

The IAEA emergency meeting comes as the conflict between Israel and Iran enters its tenth day, now widened with active US involvement.

On Sunday, Israel launched a fresh round of airstrikes on Iranian military targets in western Iran, just hours after Iran fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv, injuring civilians and causing widespread damage.

The ongoing conflict began on June 13, when Israel initiated “Operation Rising Lion,” a large-scale assault on Iranian military and nuclear assets. Iran responded with “Operation True Promise 3,” targeting Israeli energy infrastructure and military supply lines through drones and missiles.

As tensions rise and fears of regional destabilization grow, the international community now looks toward the IAEA’s emergency session for signs of a possible diplomatic intervention.
