Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi announced on Wednesday that 184 DNA matches have been confirmed so far following the devastating crash of a London-bound Air India flight in Ahmedabad on June 12.
Taking to social media platform X, Sanghavi posted, “Air India crash update: As of 8 am, 184 DNA have been matched.” The forensic efforts are being jointly conducted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU).
Earlier, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr. Rakesh Joshi had reported 163 DNA matches. Providing further details, he stated that mortal remains of 124 victims had already been handed over to families. Of the remaining 39, the remains of 21 deceased were scheduled for handover by Wednesday morning, while two were in process and four were on hold due to legal complexities. Over a dozen families continue to await identification results.
Updating on the injured, Dr. Joshi said, “On the day of the crash, 71 injured individuals were admitted. Forty-two have been discharged, nine are still admitted, and sadly, two succumbed to their injuries after admission.”
The catastrophic incident took place when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into the hostel complex of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar area shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of 242 on board, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Authorities continue to work around the clock to provide closure to grieving families and assist those recovering from the aftermath of the disaster.
