Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited Shirgao on Saturday following a tragic stampede during the Lairai Devi jatra that resulted in six deaths and over 50 injuries. The incident occurred in the early hours between 4 and 5 AM and is being described as the first such tragedy in the state’s history.

Speaking at the site, CM Sawant confirmed he had met with the injured at various hospitals and directed the state administration to conduct a thorough inquiry into the cause of the stampede. He also stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally called to enquire about the situation and offered support.

Maem MLA Premendra Shet explained that the stampede occurred due to a slippery, sloped area near the temple where several devotees fell, triggering panic and a crushing rush among the crowd. Of the six deceased, four bodies are currently at the district hospital in Mapusa, while two are at the Community Health Centre. Four critically injured individuals are undergoing treatment.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi both expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended their condolences to the bereaved families.
