India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, hailed this year’s International Day of Yoga (IDY) as “particularly special” after King Charles III shared a message of support on the occasion — a first of its kind gesture from the British monarch.
Speaking to ANI during the celebrations held at The Strand in London, Doraiswami said, “This year is particularly special as we had for the first time, as far as I’m aware, a message from His Majesty the King… a special gesture for this anniversary day of International Day of Yoga.”
The event, hosted by the Indian High Commission in collaboration with King’s College London, saw participation from thousands of yoga enthusiasts, members of the Indian diaspora, diplomats, and cultural performers. The celebrations reflected this year’s global theme: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
Participants engaged in guided yoga and meditation sessions, followed by Indian classical music and dance, highlighting the cultural and spiritual essence of yoga.
King Charles’ message, shared during the event, read: “The theme of this year, Yoga for One Earth, One Health, reminds us how vitally important it is that the world comes together to secure a happy and healthy future for present and future generations… Yoga is increasing in popularity across the UK with millions reaping its benefits. I send my best wishes to all those taking part in celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Yoga, promoting unity, compassion, and well-being.”
Doraiswami also reflected on the scientific and symbolic significance of June 21, the summer solstice, as a fitting day to honour yoga — a practice that blends science, health, and heritage.
Attendees included spiritual practitioners and long-time yoga followers.
A Brahma Kumaris representative remarked, “Yoga for me is a way to manage thoughts and spread positive energy. It’s a way to bring inner peace and align with the world around us.”
Dr. Jayan Buddhudev, who has practiced yoga since childhood, said, “Yoga integrates body and nature. I’ve practiced since age eight. It’s vital for a healthy, balanced life.”
The event’s vibrant blend of yoga, culture, and unity was described by one participant as a “melting pot of cultures coming together under the blue sky to celebrate oneness.”
The Indian High Commission in the UK, in a post on X, stated: “The 11th #InternationalDayOfYoga was celebrated today at the iconic Strand, London! Yoga enthusiasts gathered for open and free yoga session hosted by @HCI_London & @KingsCollegeLon under this year’s theme: Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
Since its UN endorsement in 2014, the International Day of Yoga — initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — has become a global celebration of wellness, consciousness, and harmony.
